Dayton Trades MacKinnon to Isotopes for Jared McCann, Four prospects and two picks...

Dayton, OH

A statement from Dayton General Manager Bill Corfield regarding this morning's trade with Springfield.

Good morning,

Late last night, we came to an agreement with the Isotopes to trade Nathan MacKinnon to Springfield. In return, we acquired a package of one young man already playing in the CCHL, former 24th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by Vancouver, Jared McCann. Jared is in his 3rd season in the NHL and since being traded to Florida a year ago has begun to really show the promise everyone knew he had. He's currently centering the fourth line for the Panthers and also seeing time on the power play.  We envision Jared as a future 2nd line center or possibly as part of our checking line. We'll need to see how things develop.

In addition to Jared, we obtained four prospects we're quite excited about.

Victor Mete a defenseman, at just 19 has been skating with Shea Weber on the top defensive pairing in Montreal in the NHL. Mete sits 4th on that team in time on ice among dmen. A fabulous skater, Vic has shown a lot of poise so far and in time, should be a steady producer on their offense. We expect him to be a middle pairing guy for us next year and part of our power play.

Jeremy Roy is another defenseman currently playing in San Jose of the AHL for NHL Sharks. Taken with the 31st pick of the 2015 draft, Jeremy is 20 and we expect to see him join us in a year or two. There's a lot of talent ahead of him on the depth chart, but he's a little higher in terms of having turned pro already, so we may see him before kids like Fabbro or Makar. He's a well-rounded player, who knows his way around a power play.

Warren Foegle is a left winger, 21 years old, playing for Carolina's AHL team. He's got 4 goals in his first 4 games this season. We like everything about Warren. Great skater, very smart and defensively mature beyond his years. Another candidate for a future second line up here in a few years - or maybe less if he keeps scoring.

Danill Tarasov is a goaltending prospect out of Russia. 6'4, pretty big guy, he's a big part of the Bluejackets future plans as he is ours. He's the number one goaltender for Tolpar of the MHL. He's still 18 years old, so we'll be keeping an eye on him for the next few years. High upside if he develops correctly, and its good to be able to add another quality goalie to our prospect list, which is a little thin for our liking.

We also got our 2nd rounder back from Springfield, we project that to be a top 25 pick. That should give us three of the top 35 picks or so in the next draft, which we like a lot. We also picked up the Isotopes 4th rounder which is nice too.

All in all, we are very pleased with the return we got for Nathan. Our prospect system has steadily climbed in the rankings over the last few months, we expect to be in the top ten in the near future.

We know how to do this. We've done it before. The next few years will be a bit tough, but exciting to watch these young kids of ours come up and challenge themselves to play in the CCHL. Next year, we know we'll have Mattias Janmark all year, we'll have Severson, Borgman, Sanheim and possibly Chabot with us as well. Oh, and Victor Mete, too. That's six young guys who will help us be faster and be fun to watch.

In closing, we wish Nate all the best in Springfield. He's an amazing talent and while we've traded him twice, we think the world of him.

Thanks everybody...

Jarrod Skalde out! Georgetown Fires Head Coach. ..

GEO press release

The Georgetown Millers Hockey Club have relieved head coach Jarrod Skalde of his duties.

"We are thankful for everything Jarrod has given this club over the years, but our recent play has been unacceptable and we feel a new voice is needed in the locker room and on the bench. We wish Jarrod the best in his future and are confident that he will be very successful in his next coaching job."

A legendary name in Central Kentucky hockey has been tapped to replace Skalde. Roy Sommer, former coach of the AHL Kentucky Thoroughblades, will take over the position immediately. Kane paces attack in Aces win.

CANADIAN PRESS (Sudbury, ON)

Evander Kane scored two goals, including the game-winner with 1:49 into overtime, to lead the Las Vegas Aces to a 3-2 victory over the Sudbury Miners on Tuesday night.

Vincent Trocheck and Tobias Reider each had two points in a losing effort for the Miners, while goalie Ben Bishop stopped 24 of 27 shots faced.

After a scoreless two periods, Las Vegas opened the scoring in the third period, when Paul Byron's shot from the circle was blocked by Bishop, but continued its momentum and trickled into the net.

The Aces would extend their lead later in the period when Kane capitalized on an Anthony Duclair turnover for an easy goal past Bishop at 9:02 of the third period.

The Miners would respond halfway through the third, as Ben Hutton, with his third of the season, tipped Trocheck's shot past Aces goalie Carter Hutton cut the lead to 2-1.

The Miners would continue to press the Aces and Reider would tie the game at 2, his eighth of the season.  Trocheck and Adam Larsson would draw this assists.  Despite numerous chances at both ends of the rink, the two teams would remain tied at the end of regulation and head to overtime.

In overtime, Miner's defenseman Shea Theodore would receive an untimely minor penalty for slashing setting the stage for Kane's winner.  His wrist shot found its way past Bishop to give the Aces the road win.

"The disappointing part is we didn't play that way for 60 minutes," Trocheck said. "You can't wait 'til it's 1-0 or 2-0 to get grittier. It's frustrating because I know we can play like that. We've proven it, we've shown it. You can't take periods off or you can't take shifts off. You gotta work."

MINERS NUGGETS

- Miners forward Joonas Donskoi continues to struggle in his first season in Sudbury.  He has dropped to the fourth line last night and has yet to record a point in 24 games this season.

- Tobias Reider currently sits as the Miners scoring leader with 15 points.

- Goaltender Jake Allen will get the start on Thursday versus the Springfield Isotopes.  Springfield currently sits on top of the Canosa Conference with 32 points.

Debut Edition of Scoring Impact, with Matt Young

Matt Young, Host of "Scoring Impact"
In an age of fancy stats that are helping redefine the game of hockey, a new form of fancy stat was released by TSN in Canada on Tuesday.  The name of the stat is scoring impact and it's not nearly as complicated as Corsi, Fenwick and the rest of them.

Scoring impact is simply put, giving two points to the player who scores the goal rather than just the simple one point.  The design is to make it worth more than the assist, simply because you can get two assists on a goal but only one guy can put the biscuit in the basket for the goal.

The goal is the harder feat to accomplish and it is indeed goals that are accounted for on the scoreboard, so why wouldn't the goal be worth more than an assist.  This would allow us to truly measure the more impactful players in the game.

If we look at the CCHL scoring leaders, Springfield's Ryan Getzlaf is out ahead by six points in the overall scoring lead; but he only has seven goals on the year.  Would he still be the CCHL scoring leader if we measured things in terms of scoring impact?  Let's take a look.

REAL CCHL SCORING LEADERS:

Team Player Goals Assists Points
SPR        Getzlaf 7 33 40
CGY       Crosby 16 18 34
WIS        Draisaitl 10 24 34
SPR        Arvidsson 18 14 32
SAN Zetterberg 10 21 31
SPR         Saad 14 14 28
HAM Laine 14 14 28
CGY Pavelski 8 20 28
FOR Reinhart 7 21 28
CGY Panarin 13 14 27

CCHL SCORING IMPACT LEADERS:
Team Player Goals Assists Points Scoring Impact
CGY Crosby 16 18 34 50
SPR         Arvidsson 18 14 32 50
SPR        Getzlaf 7 33 40 47
WIS        Draisaitl 10 24 34 44
SPR         Saad 14 14 28 42
HAM Laine 14 14 28 42
SAN Zetterberg 10 21 31 41
CGY Panarin 13 14 27 40
CGY Pavelski 8 20 28 36
FOR Reinhart 7 21 28 35

What can we conclude from this?  We can conclude that while Arvidsson and Crosby may not have as many points, their contributions may indeed be greater to their team than the actual scoring leader Ryan Getzlaf.

Of course, we're not going to change the scoring race and point system anytime soon but it's interesting to see how the scoring leaders change when you analyze it by the fancy stat scoring leaders.

From time to time we'll review this stat as the season goes on to see just who is making the most significant impact.

Thanks for reading the inaugural edition of scoring impact.

Dayton Trades Brian Elliott to the Victoria Ronin

Dayton has traded Brian Elliott to the Victoria Ronin for Alex Burmistrov and prospect Nick Henry.

(Here is the transcript of the alleged conversation between Elliott and his now-former teammate Thomas Vanek.)

Vanek- "Brian?"

Elliott- "Hey Tom, what's up?"

Vanek- "I just heard, you were moved to Victoria, eh?"

Elliott - "That's what Dion tells me. I got the text a couple hours ago that the deal was done. I'm on my way to the Soundstage to pick up my stick and some gear and then catch a flight to BC to meet DonPaulo and the rest of the guys."

Vanek-"Well, you'll be missed, man. You knew it was going to be a shitshow this season and all you did was keep your mouth and play your ass off. I hope this works out good for you, Brian."

Elliott-"Hey thanks, Tom, I appreciate it. I enjoyed the dinners we grabbed together and it was fun bullshitting about our careers. You have you're work cut out for you the rest of the season, you know?"

Vanek-"No shit, I'm trying to put up some decent numbers so I can get some contract offers after the season ends. I highly doubt Dayton will bring me back because there's no reason to pay a guy like me $7.6 million bucks. They'll have some kids and other free agents on the team next year. Its hard for everybody, and especially the fans. But, there are some great players on the way and in about 3-4 years, Dayton will start rockin' again."

Elliott-"Yes, I think you're right. Hey did you see who I was traded for?"

Vanek-"Yeah, Burmistrov and some kid from the Regina Pats. Last name is Henry and he's a sleeper type. Burmistrov is on his last shot in the league out in Vancouver. If he pulls his normal crap, he'll be finished. Probably head back to Russia and play in the KHL."

Elliott-"Yeah, I think so. Hey Tom, I have to go, Donpaulo is calling- I need to take this. Good luck man and we'll catch up when we start the Intra-conference schedule in a couple weeks. Take care, man!"

Vanek-"Sounds good, Brian. Be safe.. good luck!"

Elliott's Last Stand as a Musicman...

Monday evening's game between Dayton and Dartmouth, that ended in a 1-1 tie, featured a similar storyline that the Musicmen have grown quite accustomed to.

Dayton will be outshot by a large margin.

Check.

Dayton will not score more than one goal.

Check.

The opposing offense will be frustrated by their inability to score against the seemingly over-matched Musicmen. (In the last three games, Dayton has allowed just 4 goals and has gone 0-1-2 on this current road trip.)

Check

Dayton's Brian Elliott will perform miracles in the Dayton net.

Check.

Dartmouth outshot Dayton 57-26. Usually, a shot differential like that means good things for the team that is on the good end of those shot totals. Not Monday evening.

Brian Elliott has been red-hot over the last ten days and now sits atop the Goalie rating standings in the CCHL. Elliott's save percentage has risen from a sub-,900 number to .918%. A save percentage of 918% isn't above average, but given the caliber of the Musicmen defense and how many shots Elliott has to face each night, it's pretty amazing.

Elliott is at a loss to explain why he's played so well.

"I'm not doing anything different. I'm watching my angles, trying to stay big, not overplay the puck, you know, all the basics," said Elliott. "I had a good off-season and I understand what's happening as far as me staying here is concerned. That's beyond my control."

Rumors persist and Elliott's agent Michel Dion continues to pressure Dayton General Manager to move Elliott to another team. Various media outlets are reporting that Corfield is now in a very serious level of negotiations with a team in the Canosa Conference.

"Look, when I have something official to report, you will all know," said Corfield to the local media in Dartmouth.

Chinook power play strikes four times in 8-3 win against Thunder

CALGARY –  The Calgary Chinook didn’t figure to go the entire season without a power-play goal.

They probably didn’t expect to go 4-for-10 with the man-advantage on Monday night either.
But that’s what happened against the Niagara Fall Thunder and those goals made the difference in the 8-3 victory at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Letang, Pavelski, Crosby, and Pastrnak scored on the power-play for the Chinook, and goalkeeper Price made 16 saves to get his 12th win of the season.

“When you create good tactics and you do good things on the power play, don’t change anything,” Chinook coach Eugene Yip said. “Just stick with what’s been creating your opportunities.”

Crosby gave the Chinook a 4-2 lead when he scored on a slap shot off a faceoff win in the Thunder zone with two minutes remaining after Byfuglien went to the penalty box for tripping.

“No excuse for that one,” Byfuglien said of the penalty. “I was trying to make a play on the puck. I can’t take that penalty at that time of the game.”

It was all Chinook after the goal, as Weber and Pastrnak scored within 15 seconds between.

Letang took a shot that Niagara Fall goalie Mrazek was unable to glove. Niederreiter and teammate Henrik Sedin both went after the rebound, but it was Nino who backhanded the puck between the pads of Mrazek at 0:46 of the third period for his tenth goal of the season.

NOTES:
Crosby scored his 15th and 16th of the season.  He is 2nd in points just behind Springfield’s Getzlaf.
Giordano slowly climbing the plus-minus ranking with his +18 in 23 games.

UP NEXT:
The Calgary Chinook will host the Wisborg Donuts Wednesday night.  Tim Horton will give out free donut whenever Chinook scored in the game.  One lucky winner will get a year supply of donuts if the Chinook goalie gets a shutout.
