GLHL Game of the week: Blades slash Corn Kings to bits

In the GLHL game of the week, the Jarvis Corn Kings played host to the Provost Blades affiliate of the Reykjavik Puffin. With tough physical play and a deeper bench, the Blades carried the day 4 -0.

Syracuse native Boo Nieves who is also wearing an “A” for the Corn Kings. “We won more than half of our games (in the preseason). We still have some stuff to work on.” Nieves is 23 and has been playing organized hockey for 19 years. The Corn Kings may have lost the game and may have been a tired group but they never stopped trying and battling for the puck. They played until the whistle and that is what every coach wants to see.

“It was a decent game but we ran out of legs. They had us 17 to ten skaters and we just ran out of gas,” said Jarvis Corn Kings Head Coach Roy Sommer. The rest of the Corn Kings and a couple Blades are down with what team Doctor Rusty Johnson called “extreme gastrointestinal distress.”

The first period was a physical, goaltenders duel. The Blades came out crashing from the opening faceoff. The Corn Kings stood their ground giving as good as they got when it came to the rough stuff. Both goaltenders, Mike McNiven from Jarvis, and Oskar Dansk of the Blades stopped everything thrown at them. The first period ended with a scoreless tie 0 - 0.

The second started off just as rough and tumble with the Jarvis boys taking 6 penalties in the frame. Unfortunately for the Corn Kings, Provost scored one-third of those penalties going up 3 - 0 at the end of the second period. The Blades got powerplay goals from Vladislav Kamenev, Clark Bishop and an even-strength test by Captain Jordan Subban. Jarvis had several chances to get on the board but Dansk slammed the door every time The second period ended 3 – 0 Provost. “They came at us hard the whole time we came back a bit harder,” said Nieves

Jarvis started the third with everything they had but it Provost would score an insurance goal halfway through the third and Dansk earned himself a shutout. The game wrapped up 4 – 0 for Provost over the Corn Kings. “I don't know about the (other) guys but I was pretty tired.” echoed Nieves. Mike McNiven had a great game despite allowing 4 goals. He stopped at least 10 more good scoring chances and had 2 or 3 truly outstanding saves.

“This is our first league game. We played divisional games and we came out a little bit above .500 which worked out well. We're tiered up against predominately south teams and all of a high level. It's going to be some tough play for us.” clarified Coach Sommer who is in his 8th year behind the Jarvis bench.

“I'm looking forward to playing Dunnville (Fort Erie) the most they are our rivalry team. They have been for years. It's always good games when we play them.” said Nieves. The Corn Kings next league game is Friday the 9th when they play host to the Dunnville Bulldogs.
