Miners trade Wilson to Dartmouth for draft pick.

The Sudbury Miners and Dartmouth Lakers made a move late Thursday afternoon, as the Miners sent pending forward Tom Wilson, to the Dartmouth Lakers in exchange for Dartmouth’s 4th round pick in 2018.

Dartmouth will take on Wilson’s $2.25 million cap hit for the remainder of this season and next. With this latest transaction, Sudbury again moves a non-producing veteran contract for a draft pick. Sudbury will pick 12 times in the first three rounds of the 2018 draft, barring any further transactions.

“I enjoyed my time here with Sudbury. The organization is top notch and I think they have a very bright future. But, at this stage of my career, I want a chance to play and prove myself. I am happy to be able to do that in Dartmouth. It is very exciting”, stated the out-going Wilson.

Wilson was drafted in the second round of the 2012 CCHL Entry Draft (23rd overall) by the now defunct Karlstad Killers. Sudbury acquired Wilson in a trade with the Minnesota Norsemen at the end of last season. In 10 games this year with the Miners, Wilson recorded a single assist to go along with 19 penalty minutes.

The question surrounding Wilson lately is he will he ever reach his potential. In his draft year, Wilson was a highly touted power forward, who would use his big frame to punish opponents and create scoring chances. However, lately he seemed to have developed into an underwhelming early draft pick for that garnered a reputation for being a chippy fourth-line player with a passion for physical play, sometimes over the line.

It is worth noting that Wilson is still relatively young in CCHL terms (23 years old), so there is still time for him to develop what scouts had seen during his junior hockey days with the Plymouth Whalers. He will get that chance in Dartmouth.
