Trader Sam is Back!

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Trader Sam's fantastic trade reviews.

I'm Trader Sam your host!  I'm taking a break from drinking eggnog, putting up Christmas trees and seeing who has been naughty or nice to run down the latest transactional activity in the CCHL.

Enough about what I've been doing though, let's look at the trades!

DRT trades DRT 4th-18 to SUD for T. Wilson...

It appears that DRT is preparing for the eventual departure of Troy Brouwer by getting a poor man's version of Troy Brouwer.

I don't think the deal was unfair at all, but I'm just not sure what Brouwer brings to the table in DRT that they do not already have.  That team needs scoring and this trade, in my opinion, doesn't address their need.

Sudbury gets another draft pick for their collection.  The upcoming drafts will be nothing but Sudbury and Dayton as they continue their Pokemon-like quest to catch them all when it comes to prospects.

DAY trades D. Severson & SIB 4th-18 to SUD for Ukko-Pekka Lukkonnen-p & Juho Lammikko-p...

Congratulations Severson!  You go from one team rebuilding to another team rebuilding in the other conference.  You must be excited!

Rumour has it that Severson did not block enough shots to play a prominent role in the Dayton lineup so off he goes in exchange for two prospects that Sam really likes.

Lammikko is a really sound two-way forward and Lukkonnen is an exciting goaltending prospect.  I think both teams did well in meeting their own needs here at the end of the day.

You just can't help but wonder how things may have been different in Dayton if Severson allowed himself to get hit by pucks like Matt Irwin.

FOR trades P. Grubauer & REK 3rd-19 to REK for F. Andersen & REK 2nd-19...
Fort Erie continues their shuffle, clearly viewing goaltender John Gibson as their goalie of the future.

The Puffin continue to cut salary, trading Andersen and his expensive contract to Fort Erie for a goaltender performing in a similar way.  It cost them a draft pick swap to do so but neither team is worse for this given Fort Erie's financial flexibility following the Seguin and de Haan deals.

DAY trades Jack Studnicka-p to POR for POR 2nd-18...

Dayton didn't see a big future for Studnicka in their future so they found a trade partner in Portland to take him off of their hands.

Studnicka is a solid two-way player but he is not the type that is likely to play a top-six role for a contending CCHL team in his career.  He could be a really good third line player but the top-six seems to be a little out of his reach.

Dayton recoups the second round pick used to draft Studnicka which does not make them any worse off for having made his deal.

Dayton loves picks and Portland loves "Studs" so this deal works for both organizations.

CGY trades A. Kempe & CGY 1st-19 for A. Larsson...

Calgary continues to be all-in this season acquiring Larsson for some insurance in preparation for a long playoff run.  Larsson also suits their need as he can be a key contributor going forward for the Chinook after they lose a key player on their backend to free agency at the end of the year.

Sudbury gets the highly-touted Kempe who can step into a top-nine role next season.  They also get another coveted first-round draft pick in 2019 giving the Miners an absurd amount of picks for the 2019 draft.

It's a deal that makes sense for both teams and it will all be worth it for Calgary if they can capture the coveted Kehler Cup. You can always replace draft picks but you can't replace championship banners, folks!

FOR trades C. de Haan to CGY for Mikhail Maltsev-p, Roland McKeown-p & Matthew Villalta-p...

Fort Erie found a home for the disgruntled de Haan as playing time had recently become scarce.

Touted for his ability to block shots, the Falcons found him flamingo-ing on several occasions when it came to blocking shots and he was continually a minus player despite plenty of opportunities to play with solid defensive partners.

Calgary was looking for a guy that could block shots and that was four rated.  de Haan is also just in his mid-twenties so he has plenty of serviceable years left.

Fort Erie receives a trio of solid prospects to help replenish the cupboard with Maltsev potentially becoming a guy that showcases his ability at the World Junior tournament later this month.

WIS trades K. Fiala, Z. Kassian, K. Dahlbeck, WIS 2nd-18 & WIS 3rd-18 to DRT for C. Wideman, J. Boychuck & Nick Sorensen-p...

This is one of those deals that kind of has Sam scratching his head.

While Sam really respects Boychuck's game, it seems like a really high price to pay for a guy that likely has seen his best years pass him by in the rearview mirror.

Dartmouth makes out really well here in getting Fiala and the two draft picks.  Time will tell if this move helps Wisborg but it's a high price to pay for a number three to five defenceman in the CCHL.

Although it should be noted that it's good to see Wisborg in the "buy" mode now as well.  It's been awhile since we've been able to say that and the team is being aggressive these days in their attempts to climb the standings.

NIA trades N. Schultz & NIA 2nd-18 to SPR for R. Luongo...

I don't see how this helps either team on the surface.

Yes, Niagara needs better goaltending but I'd be concerned about the viability of a goaltender in his late 30's at this point.  If Luongo is healthy he can help but giving up a second round pick for a goalie of his stature is a bit of a risk at this point.

Schultz is a guy.  Just a guy at this point to put it bluntly and if he is being relied on to play a key role for Springfield that says a lot about their defence.  This seems to be a backup player with more to come from the Isotopes to bolster their back end.

Well everyone, as Boys to Men used to sing, it's the End of the Road!  The difference between them and old Trader Sam though is that Sam knows when to let go!

With that, I hope you have enjoyed my early December musings on the trades within the CCHL.

I'll be back again when there are more trades to discuss.  Until then, be good everyone; Santa is always watching.
