Dayton Musicmen: Top Five Prospects

A look at the top five prospects in the Musicmen system as of October 9, 2017...

1) Thomas Chabot, D - High upside defenseman expected to crack the Ottawa Senator's lineup at some point this NHL season. The former 18th overall player chosen in the 2015 NHL entry draft. Chabot has high-end offensive skills but needs to address his defensive shortcomings before he can be trusted on the NHL squad. Expected CCHL Debut: Opening Day, 2018-19 season.

2) Travis Sanheim, D - Taken 17th in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the Flyers prospect made the big club out of this year's training camp. One of several high upside defensive prospects in Dayton, Sanheim is similar to Chabot in that his offensive game may be NHL ready, but questions remain regarding his defensive work. Expected CCHL Debut: Opening Day, 2018-19 season.

3) Yevgeni Svechinov, LW - Drafted 19th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Wings, Svechinov had a very reasonable first year as a pro in Grand Rapids, tallying 20 goals and 31 assists for 51 pts. in 74 regular season games. He added another 12 points in 19 AHL Playoff games for the Griffins. Already 6'3 and 200+ pounds, at the tender age just 20, the big Russian has been praised by Griffin's head coach Todd Nelson for his faster than average maturity in his time in the Wings organization. Expected CCHL Debut: Opening Day, 2018-19 season.

4) Andreas Borgman, D - The former Swedish Hockey league's rookie of the year was signed as a free agent by the Toronto Maple Leafs and made the NHL club as the team's sixth defenseman and member of the team's third blueline pairing. At six feet and 212 pounds, the skilled blueliner is thought to bring a two-way game to the Leafs. Borgman's biggest challenge may be adapting his game to the smaller rinks and more physical style of play in the National Hockey League. Expected CCHL Debut: Opening Day, 2018-19 season.

5) Dante Fabbro, D - Yet another top twenty draft pick in the NHL, this Nashville prospect brings a polished two way game to Boston University where he will begin his second NCAA season. As a freshman, Fabbro was in the top twenty scoring for all Hockey East defenseman in the 2016-17 season and was fifth among all freshman in scoring. His 6'1 and 192 lb. frame should continue to fill out over the next few years as he benefits from the caliber of instruction and competition. Expected CCHL Debut: Opening Day, 2020-21 season.

Comment from rival anonymous CCHL GM: Corfield has a ton of young forwards up with the big team in Dayton this year. Most of the guys on this list will be the next wave of high-quality defensemen in Southwest Ohio. Dayton needs to address its future goaltending, but with almost 40 picks in the next two draft, I'll be shocked if he doesn't go heavy on goalie prospects over the next couple years. Give them a few years, the Musicmen know how to do this as well as anybody.
