Guess who’s back, back again. Trader Sam, tell a friend….

Ok so I won’t be giving up my career analyzing CCHL trades for a career in rap music, but I am back again to review and comment on all the latest transactional news in the CCHL.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...ISL trades E. Staal & C. de Haan to FOR for O. Maatta, J. Eberle, T. Kero, & German Robtsov-p...

Fort Erie gets Eric Staal and reacquires Calvin de Haan for a plethora of young talent in Kero, Maatta and Robtsov.  This trade is good for both sides as it allows Long Island to free up a log jam down the middle and add depth to their right wing position with the talented Eberle, who brings much needed offense to the offensively challenged Express.  Should Maatta manage to stay healthy and Robtsov play in a few years, this could look like an absolute steal for Long Island.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...DAY signed G. McKegg to a 1 yr., $650K contract...

Why the heck not take a look at the relatively young McKegg this season if you are Dayton.  The cost is little and the once talented junior player and Dayton can’t lose in a year where they aren’t trying to win.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...MIN trades P. Bergeron & MIN 5th-19 to FOR for E. Staal, Nic Hague-p & Calle Rosen-p...

The Falcons immediately turn around and flip Staal, along with two young defencemen for impending free agent Patrice Bergeron.  Bergeron should help a weak Fort Erie faceoff group and can provide offense up-and-down the lineup.  Staal is signed for another year after this and could help Minnesota down the middle.  When you add in the addition of Hague and Rosen, this deal could play out very well for Minnesota over the long-term, especially if they didn’t have any desire to resign Bergeron.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...DAY trades Marcus Petterson-p & POR 3rd-18 to HAL for D. Severson...

Dayton needed a defenceman that could play now and have acquired Severson, a solid puck-moving defender.  While Severson has yet to reach his offensive ceiling, the price was relatively high with Dayton giving up highly touted defenceman Marcus Petterson and a third round pick.  While Dayton gains now, this move could hurt them in the long term despite the fact that Severson is still in his early twenties.  It’s really hard to argue against this move for either team.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...GEO trades A. Markov & $2M to HAL for B. Dillon...

Georgetown trades the aging Andrei Markov to Halifax for the rugged Brendan Dillon.  Markov has clearly lost a step and has now been moved a second time this season which can’t be good for the former all-star’s ego.  How will he rebound from the move in Halifax?  Can he recapture some of his youth playing alongside youngsters Matthews and Huberdeau?  Dillon helps a Millers team with a lot of impending free agent players and is significantly cheaper than Markov as well.  While Dillon is not necessarily required to play given the depth of the Millers, he’s certainly a nice insurance policy to have should the need arise.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...LAS waives B. Richardson...(Waiver expiration date 10/17/17)...

Richardson is one of the worst puck possession players in the CCHL today.  It was only a matter of time until he was either sent to the minors or released.  Unfortunately for Richardson, he likely won’t be plucked off of the waiver wire given his CORSI scores and the quantity of turnovers he creates on a regular basis.  If he was a baker, he’d be great.  Unfortunately he plays hockey and the only thing a turnover gets you in the CCHL is unemployment.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...SUD trades P. Nemeth to HAL for Nathan Bastian-p...

This one struck a chord when it came across ol’ Trader Sam’s desk.  Why would Halifax give up a solid prospect in Bastian for a guy that isn’t even going to play in their lineup.  What’s worse is that Nemeth is very injury prone so this one didn’t make a lot of sense to me but good on Sudbury for getting a solid prospect in return for a defenceman that didn’t have a future in the Nickel City.

CCHL LEAGUE OFFICES...MIN trades A. Watson, Stelio Mattheos-p & MIN 4th-19 to POR for A. McQuaid & T. Nosek...

This one was also interesting as well.  Watson is a solid but unspectacular fourth liner that can bang bodies with the best of them in the league.  Mattheos is an interesting prospect in that he has yet to develop offensively in junior as many thought he would, but could break out at any point given he was once a first overall pick in the WHL draft.  McQuaid brings a big body presence to the Norsemen blue line and clearly wasn’t part of Portland’s future so they moved him to continue their rebuild with a nice prospect.  Nosek is an interesting player and could be a sleeper in this deal down the road, but when evaluating the deal today it’s truly hard to read what he could be in the CCHL.  I like the deal for both sides and each have considerable risk in the form of Matteos and Nosek heading the other way.

That’s all for this edition of Trader Sam’s CCHL trade round up.  I look forward to returning so if you enjoy this blog – make some more trades happen so I have something to write about.
