Dayton trades Alex Barkov to Calgary for prospect Makar, Greenway and picks...

Once again the trade winds seemingly blow in a straight line from Dayton Ohio to Calgary Alberta.

Just hours after Dayton GM Bill Corfield sent the entire CCHL an email soliciting offers for Brian Elliott and showed a willingness to include one of their marquee centers, Eugene Yip came calling.

In a day that started with a bizarre demand from Elliott's agent, Michel Dion, who stormed the Musicmen offices before they were even open to demand a trade, Corfield wasn't expecting what Calgary would want.

I'd basically felt Yip's roster was pretty set. I figured he'd add some depth at the trade deadline but, they're doing really well, so no - I didn't really expect to hear from him today.

The tick-tock was basically this.

3:42pm - Dayton sends out a trade block with Elliott featured, but GM Corfield throws in a teaser phrase that one of his young forwards could be moved in a larger deal.

3:43pm - Email from Calgary arrives in Corfield inbox, asking "What do you want back for Barkov or Monahan?"

4:48pm - Dayton responds with an introductory offer of Barkov for prospects Cale Makar and Jordan Greenwood

5:27pm - Calgary asks if Corfield means prospect Jordan Greenway?

5:44pm - Eugene receives email response from Corfield indicating yes - Greenway is the kid's name, not Greenwood, which sounds like a deck stain or something.

6:16pm - Both GM's nibble around the edges of the deal and its agreed Dayton will send some cash to the destitute Chinook, as long as they agree to send a few quality draft picks to Ohio.

7:29pm - Names like Sedin, Vermette and Beachemin are discussed and ultimately rejected. None will be a part of the final deal.

7:32pm - Dayton sends Calgary a revised offer including $3,000,000 and a request of three different draft picks from the upcoming 2018 CCHL Entry Draft.

8:09pm - Calgary counters with a slight tweak to the Dayton offer.

8:11pm - Dayton officially accepts Calgary's offer.

8:22pm - Official trade details and agreement forms are transmitted to the CCHL League offices.

8:27pm - Official trade confirmation email is sent from Dayton accepting the deal.

10:35pm - The complete transaction is posted to the league website. Trade has been completed.

Local media in Dayton posted these comments from General Manager Corfield, "We felt that with MacKinnon, Barkov, Drouin and Larkin, we should move one of them in order to improve our depth chart at another position. Cale Makar, was the 4th player taken overall in the last draft and the second defenseman chosen. He projects to be an elite, top pairing blueliner. Adding him to our stable of other high upside defensive prospects like Chabot, Sanheim and Fabbro gives us a very exciting future to look forward to. Greenway is a tough left winger, who - like Makar - is honing his skills in the Hockey East league. At 6'5, 225 pounds already, he's already NHL ready. He's developing nicely and he figures to be in the mix of other young wingers we're watching closely throughout our system." said Corfield.

"After this deal, we have 41 picks in the next two drafts. We have seven picks in the top three rounds combined. We've hired extra scouts and feel we're blanketing the global hockey world and come the next two drafts, we'll quickly regain the quality and depth we had a few years ago. We're in constant contact with our scouts, they report in weekly and we've upped our game on the IT front as well. We've hired some computer experts from Russia to help us with this information. We're very excited about how our team is coming along."
