Despite strong effort, Miners still lose.

CANADIAN PRESS (Sanibel, FL) –

Matt Cullen broke a 1-1 tie with 13:33 left in the third period as the Sanibel Islanders beat the struggling Sudbury Miners, 2-1 on Thursday night.   With the loss, the losing streak for the Miners has reached a team record eight games.

Sudbury's Tobias Rieder opened the scoring, a short-handed marker, at 7:11 of the first. Rieder blocked a point shot from Islanders defenseman Anton Stralman and was in all alone on Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak.  Rieder’s quick snapshot to the low blocker side beat Halak, giving Rieder his seventh of the year.

The Islanders tied it at 1 on their eighth power-play goal of the season, scored by T.J Oshie on a long slap shot that got past Miners goalie Jake Allen’s glove side at 11:53 of the first period.  Anton Stralman and Henrik Zetterberg drawing the assists.

The two teams would remain tied until Cullen’s game-winner, late in the third.

Halak made 23 saves for the Islanders, holding strong after Cullen's tiebreaking goal to notch his second win of the year.

Jake Allen made 26 saves and took the loss for the Miners.

The Miners blew a great scoring chance early in the second in a 1-1 game, failing to capitalize on overlapping tripping penalties on Kris Versteeg and Taylor Chorney that left them with a 5-on-3 advantage for over a minute.

"It's frustrating we're not getting the results we want," Rieder said. "I thought our effort was way better, but at the end of the game we didn't get the two points and that's what we play for."
