Dayton Falls to Chinook, 3-1

Matt Irwin's knee after blocking a Sidney Crosby Slapshot
The host Calgary Chinook, featuring seven former Musicmen players, defeated Dayton 3-1 at TD Garden in downtown Calgary tonight.

Calgary threw 59 shots on goal against Musicman goaltender Brian Elliott, who stopped 56 of them.

"Yes, I was busy tonight, but the guys played their butts off. Our D blocked 7 shots and Matty Irwin had to leave after blocking a Crosby slapper. Bad luck, Sid doesn't usually take a lot of slap shots but the one in the first period caught Irwin full flush on the knee. It cut his knee through the shin pads and everything. Tough kid, Irwin is." said Elliott.

Alex Barkov scored the game's first goal tonight when he netted his third of the year past Carey Price. Barkov stole the puck from former Musicman Jim Pavelski and walked in from the right wing circle and beat the Chinook goalie with a snapshot through the five-hole.

Ten minutes later, Calgary tied it up on a power play goal from Ryan Suter, set up by Pavelski and Crosby, all former members of the Musicmen.

"Yes, it's strange playing against those guys - a lot of them are our friends, but we all have a job to do." said Crosby.

Calgary scored its second power-play goal of the game halfway through the second period Ryan O'Reilly scored his third goal of the year with Dayton's Jokipakka in the box for a two-minute interference penalty.

Nine minutes later, with less than two minutes left in the second period, Sidney Crosby scored his sixth goal of the year and he and Artemi Panarin teamed up on a two on one against Mark Stuart, to make it 3-1, which is how the game ended.

Dayton defensemen blocked a total of seven shots tonight, with Stuart leading everyone with four blocks. "Calgary just kept coming at us in waves. We had to do whatever we could to help out Elliott."

Dayton took eight minor penalties on the night and all of the infractions were committed by defensemen. Stuart said, "Was that all? The ref's missed a couple more, trust me, lol..."

What's next:

Dayton will return home to Ohio and welcome the Niagara falls Thunder on Tuesday night.

Notes:

Irwin will miss Tuesday's game but is expected to return for the game against Ottawa the following night. Marc Methot is expected to return for next Friday's game when the Falcons come to the Soundstage.

Tonight's one goal marked just the second time this season the Musicmen scored less than two goals.
