MINERS CAN’T TAME THE TIGERS, LOSE 5-2

Mike Green and Tobias Reider provided goals for Sudbury, but it was not enough as the Hamilton Tigers defeated Sudbury by a 5-2 count last night, in front of a sold out Vale Centre. “We’re obviously disappointed,” said Miners center Vincent Trocheck. “I thought we were ready to play and were the better team for most of the night.  In the end, things just didn’t go our way.”

Duncan Keith staked Hamilton to an early 1-0 lead, 0:30 into the game when his shot from the point sailed past a screened Miners goaltender Jake Allen.  Patrick Kane would add to the lead and put the Tigers up 2-0, with still half of the first period to play. The Miners would respond on a goal by Mike Green, his first of the season, but Tigers forward Boone Jenner would round out the scoring in the opening period, to claim a 3-1 advantage.

In the second, Hamilton extended its lead to 4-1 on a goal that was credited to Marian Hossa after the puck bounced off Bo Horvat’s skate and into the net at 9:02 of the period. The two teams would trade goals in the third period, to make the final 5-2.

Craig Anderson made 32 saves and got the win for the Tigers.  Jake Allen stopped 17 shots for the Miners and took the loss.

Sudbury’s next game is Monday night at home versus the Georgetown Miners.  Game time is 7pm at the Vale Centre.  The game will be televised live in the U.S. on ESPN2, in addition to being streamed live on WatchESPN.

MINERS NUGGETS

- Shea Theodore returned to the lineup Saturday night, after being away 10 days due to an emergency appendectomy.  He played 20 minutes and ended up even on the night.

- The Miners were perfect on the penalty kill and now sit 6th overall in the league.   The power play, despite going 1 for 5 against the Tigers, remains near the bottom of the league at 20th overall.

- Monday night is the first Fan Appreciation Night of the season.  The first 7,000 fans that enter the Vale Centre will receive a foam pickaxe as a souvenir.
