Chinook hold off the Tigers in 3-1 win, as Mike Smith says goodbye...

CALGARY –  It was the last game for Chinook goaltender Mike Smith as a Chinook, and it turned out to be a great one. Mike Smith has played brilliantly in his last game. He has stopped 38 of 39 shots winning his first game of the season.

"(Smith) has been outstanding, always ready during practice even though he knows he won’t get to play many games this season," coach Eugene Yip said. "He is a great leader on and off the ice and the Chinook organization wish him the very best in Dayton which he will have more opportunity to play."

It didn't take the Hamilton Tigers to open the scoring. With Shattenkirk off for hooking, the Tigers went on the power play and Marian Hossa scored at the 8:43 mark to give Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Mikael Backlund then scored the equalizer just 1:20 into the second stanza. A giveaway by Hamhuis would send Backlund on a partial breakaway which he wristed a shot off the stick side of Dubnyk to make it 1-1.  The Chinook got the lead for the first time when Suter launched a weak shot from the slot but it bounced off the boards behind Tigers goalie Dubnyk. Captain Sidney Crosby was there and bounced the puck off the back pads of Dubnyk and into the net for his 32nd goal of the season and a 2-1 Chinook lead at the 11:51 mark.

Vanek would add one more goal just 00:18 into the third period to cement the win.  Vanek has scored in all three games ever since he came to Calgary.

"It's still a lot of hockey for us," Eugene said. "This was will be four games in four days. We're going to have to find our energy quickly here and probably look at our lineup to see if we need to do anything to get some fresh legs in there."

NOTES:

Gaudreau and Pietrangelo were hurt in the 2nd period.  They are both expected to get back into action against the Victoria Ronin tonight.
