Despite being an off day, the Fort Erie Falcons were in the news yesterday as a result of a trade announcement.

Fort Erie sent $1.5 million dollars to Las Vegas for prospects Mitchell Vande Sompel, David Kase, and Aaron Irving.

While all three of these prospects are not going to debut anytime this year or next year, it was a move to replenish some prospects lost via trade.

"It was an opportunity to replenish the system with some quality kids.  We moved quite a few out to get the team we have today, and now we need to backfill the system.  Darrell was more than happy to move them as operating a team in Vegas has been a little more expensive than his group initially thought," said Falcons GM Matt Young.

In Vande Sompel, Fort Erie is getting a solid two-way defenceman that excels on the power play yet is versatile enough to play forward on the penalty kill.

"Vande Sompel gives the coach an ability to have three defencemen on the ice, without losing anything that a forward may bring.  He's sublimely talented" added Young on the prize of the trade.

David Kase is another player received with a bit of upside in this deal.  While he has yet to come to North America, he is averaging a point per game for his team in Sweden as the youngest member of the team.  He can certainly play and should come over to play in the next year or so.

The final player received in the cash transaction was defenceman Aaron Irving.  Irving projects to be a very good minor league defenceman with that of the upside of a guy that can play as a number six should the Falcons get injury stricken.

As for the Falcons team on the ice, they are back in action on Friday night as they host the Rejkjavik Puffin.  Puck is scheduled to drop at 7:37 PM.
