Miners are no fans of “Swedish” Donuts, lose 7-1.

It’s been a good week so far, if you’re Swedish.

After Sweden’s upset win to knock perennial powerhouse Italy from the World Cup, the Wisborg Donuts kept up their end of the bargain as they hammered the Sudbury Miners, 7-1 on Tuesday night.

Jaden Schwartz led the way offensively for the Donuts with 2 goals and 3 assists.  Leon Draisaitl also chipped in 3 points for the Donuts, who opened up a 5-0 lead after one period of play.  Jonathan Bernier stopped 18 of 19 Miners shots to get the win.

“You've got to make plays and we didn't score. How do you do that? You got to keep working at it. There's no method. We're not going to go trade for Mario Lemieux” stated Miners GM Terry James, who made a rare appearance in the post-game media scrum.

As far as the game went, the Donuts and Miners had moments of wide-open 1980s-style hockey, with Wisborg finding gaping spaces to skate against the team with one of the CCHL's worst records.  Sudbury lost its second straight game after reeling off a three-game winning streak.

"Everything went wrong tonight, we weren't skating, we gave them too many odd-man rushes and they're a talented team and they take advantage of that," said Miners head coach Derek Sutton. "Right from the start, it wasn't a good game for us. I thought we got a little better in the second, but it was a bad game overall."

Aaron Ekblad scored the lone goal for the Miners.  Jake Allen made stopped 33 of 40 shots fired his way.

“I've been saying it all year: You can't complain, you can't moan. Like, just go play, work hard," Miners defenseman Ekblad said. "There's no other special secret or special juice. You just have to work your way out of it, everyone shift after shift."

The Miners return to action on Wednesday night on the road, as they travel to Ottawa to take on the Barracudas.

MINERS NUGGETS

- Winger Benoit Pouliot continues to rehab from his upper body injury suffered last week.  He has resumed skated and all signs point to him returning to the line-up on the weekend.

- Coach Derek Sutton indicated that in an effort to shake up his roster, defenceman Chris Wideman may check into the line-up in the next game or two.
