Damon Severson New Captain of Musicmen!

Twenty-three-year-old defenseman Damon Severson is the new captain of the Dayton Musicmen.

After a month-long stretch since the team was left with no captain after Alex Barkov joined Nate MacKinnon as former captains who had been traded, the team felt it was time to address the issue.

The team was told at practice a week or so ago to start giving this some serious thought.

"We know there's been a lot of changes this year. The core group of guys understands who will likely be here and who won't. We have 5-6 rookies coming on board next season we think. We'll likely have a few low profile UFA's joining us to fill holes over the Summer. Given all that, we felt that the next class of captains and alternates are very likely already on this team and already in this room." said GM Bill Corfield.

After a shortened pre-game skate this morning at the Hobart Arena in nearby Troy, OH, the team was pulled off the ice and sent to the dressing room and told to hold a discussion and select a new captain and 3 alternates.

After about 45 minutes of discussion, the team began to leave the rink to head home. Word spread quickly that Severson had been the unanimous pick to be the new captain. Selected as alternates were Dan Girardi, Derek Ryan, and Matt Nieto.

The appointments go into effect immediately.

"I am honored, to say the least," said Severson. "We've seen the kind of additions to our prospects that have been brought into the system. There's a LOT of great talented kids on their way here. I saw all the draft picks coming over the next two drafts. Over a hundred? Seriously? I want to be here when the next wave of talent arrives, it's going to be great to be a Musicman."

Game Notes:

Dayton lost 4-1 this evening to the Las Vegas Aces. Rookie Jason Dickinson scored his first career goal on a nice set up by Derek Ryan and Matt Irwin. Netminder Jared Coureau had 31 saves on 35 shots.

Dayton also traded defenseman Andreas Borgman, currently playing with Toronto in the NHL to Niagara Falls Thunder for junior prospect Drake Batherson of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Drafted in the 4th round by Ottawa in last Summer's NHL Entry Draft.
