YO-YO!!! Trader Sam Is In Da House!!!!

Good day everyone!

Trader Sam is back with a brand new invention, something grabs a hold of me tightly; then I flow like a harpoon daily and nightly.  Will it ever stop?  Yo, I don't know; but in the words of Gary B, you're going to want to hear this and this is my opinion on the latest trade activity in the CCHL.

DAY trades D. Larkin, C. Miller, Vili Saarijarvi-p, Christian Djoos-p & $5.5M to NIA for Taylor Raddysh-p, Brendan Guhle-p, Morgan Frost-p, M. Grigorenko, C. Rowney-M, NIA 4th-19, NIA 6th-19 & NIA
7th...

This deal is killing old Trader Sam's brain like a poisonous mushroom folks!  Dayton trades the highly talented Larkin, Miller and a few defensive prospects to Niagara for Raddysh, Guhle, Frost, and picks.

Niagara is clearly getting the best player in this trade today - but I emphasize today.  Larkin will certainly bolster a struggling Niagara club but is he closer to the player he was as a rookie or the player he is in his second year?  Time will tell.

If Larkin continues to play like his second year, this could be a deal Niagara Falls regrets.  Taylor Raddysh is the real deal and only gets better each year he is in junior hockey.  He's about to represent team Canada at the World Junior tournament and could be the hottest commodity available at the OHL trade deadline in a few months. Guhle has been great in the OHL and Frost has become a number one center on a contender in the OHL.  Dayton could get a steal in this deal but it’ll be a few years until we know.

MIN trades D. Dubnyk to HAM for P. Rinne & Carter Hart-p...

Hamilton GM Chuck Taylor identified a problem on his team and he realized if there is a problem, yo I’ll solve it – and he did.

Hamilton improves tremendously in goal and cost them the inconsistent Rinne and prospect Carter Hart.  Hart may be the real deal but if that’s the cost of winning a Kehler Cup, I’m sure Taylor will pay it every time.

I definitely like this trade for Hamilton and in Hart, Minnesota continues to stockpile high-end prospects in their rebuild – while staying competitive with Rinne in goal.

LAS trades M. McNiven-p & $5M to HAM for C. Anderson & J. Thornton...

Love it or leave it, you better give way to Las Vegas who upgrade in goal and at center while only costing them a prospect that is road blocked in several places.  Good move for Las Vegas but it’s also a shrewd move by Hamilton to get rid of Grandpa Joe’s gigantic contract in order to provide payroll flexibility for further upgrades.

MIN trades A. Wennberg to OTT for B. Little

This is a pretty even trade on the surface of things with Minnesota trading a quality center in Wennberg to Ottawa for Little.  Little is a great, underrated player in the CCHL and an absolute wiz in the faceoff circle.  This is a very solid move for Minnesota but it cost them a young centerman that should help Ottawa for the next decade down the middle.  Trader Sam likes this trade a lot for both teams.

SPR trades A. Anisimov, K. Russell, SPR-2nd(18), & SPR-5th(18) to REK for E. Malkin & A.Greene

To the extreme, Springfield GM Aaron Stacey stepped up to the mic and rocked it like a vandal when he announced this trade.  Adding Malkin for a few players that the Isotopes weren’t using in significant roles, along without giving up a first-round pick could be a gigantic move for the franchise looking to get back into the playoffs for the first time in I don’t know how long.

REK cuts a lot of costs but still manages to get a player for their third line.  It’s not awful and the market wasn’t going to be significant for Malkin but as Trader Sam, I feel that they could have got more.

DAY trades Jordan Greenway-p to MIN for Tanner Laczynski-p, Kasmir Kaskisou-p & Matiss Kivlenieks-p

Take heed, because the man that’s a lyrical poet, Bill Corfield is at it again!  Dayton gets itself some goaltending depth and another center to add to their arsenal of potential players down the middle.

Greenway is a nice player but should only ever play on a third line at best in the CCHL.  It’s a reasonable cost with both GMs involved in the deal looking and hoping to gamble their way to gold down the road.

FOR trades O. Palat & M. Letestu to REK for C. Giroux, A. Sekera & REK 3rd-19

Ever since the arrival of Palat in Fort Erie, the left winger has seemed lost and did not really fit into the Fort Erie game plan at all.  After finding himself a healthy scratch most of the season, it was time for him to find a new home where he could contribute.

There’s no better place than REK for that as he’s had success there for many years prior to being moved to Sudbury in the offseason.  Letestu will be a solid fourth line option for the Puffin as well.

Fort Erie gets Giroux who will likely find himself in a fourth line role the rest of the year, before switching to left wing next season on a scoring line.  Sekera was a player GM Young hated to deal in the offseason and is happy to have him back, hoping he’s able to contribute to the ever-slumping, or as some say, awful power play.  The third round pick helps offset some of the years of control Fort Erie loses in the deal, as well as some of the additional financial cost the team has taken in this deal.

That concludes another edition of Trader Sam’s trade reviews.  Want to be a part of a future column?  Make a trade and I’ll talk about it.

So now that the party is jumping, with the bass kicked in and the traders a pumpin’ it’s time for me to go.  Yo man, let’s get out of here – word to your mother!  Until next time, folks!
